More than two decades after his Urvasi Urvasi song took audiences by storm, A.R. Rahman unveiled its “reimagined” version on the seventh season of MTV Unplugged on Wednesday.
The Oscar-winning composer had asked his fans to contribute fresh lyrics for the charanam of the song and upon receiving more than a 1,000 comments on his Facebook page, picked four contributions.
A.R Rahman wrote on his Facebook Page:
“Remember when we asked all of you to suggest some funky ideas for re-arranging “Take It Easy Urvasi”..
Well we had a lot of great ideas flowing and it was tough to pick and choose but finally we’ve gone ahead with contributions from :
Prasad Krishna – “Beltu Potoom Veshti Avundha”
Achintya Vatlu – “Helmet Potoom Mama Pidicha”
Rajesh Rajamani – “Kadalai Naduvil Battery Thirndal”
Dileep Balaji – “Kizhinja Panta Fashion Nu Sonna”
Now wait to hear it 🙂 “
The new version features Rahman with Suresh Peters (who sang with him in the original hit) and composer Ranjit Barot.
Urvasi Urvasi was first composed in 1994 for Shankar’s Kadhalan, starring Prabhudeva and Nagma. The original lyrics were written by Vairamuthu.
The unplugged version, according to Rahman, is aimed to be more contemporary in its references — Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, demonetisation and some puns in Tamil. It has so far garnered more than 1.2 million views on Facebook.
